08/14/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Puddles was brought in as a stray, so there is no information on her behavior in her previous home. She was quiet during intake and allowed the counselor to scan her, but she hisses when handling is attempted. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior: Friendly and allowed all medical handling, laying in the back of the cage but when pet on head she head butted and came to the front of the cage. Was very good during all medical handling and restraint. No hissing, growling, or swatting. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Puddles was sitting by the front with her head poked out from her cubby, calm and relaxed. Reaction when softly spoken to: Puddles looks at the assessor and appeared curious, but blinks softly. Reaction to cage door opening: Puddles becomes alert, but remains in place. Reaction to touch: Puddles sniffs the assessor’s hand and head-butts lightly. She leans in for cheek rubs and begins to purr. She allows a few strokes on her back before she hisses and starts to grumble. She recovered pretty quickly and will continue to allow petting on her head. She will allow strokes on her body, but will hiss again. She may dislike being pet along her body. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Curious, Shy, Sweet POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Pet-induced aggression – Puddles appreciates petting and attention, but after a few soft passes over the body she begins to hiss and growl at the assessor. This may be a sign of petting-induced aggression, where repeated physical contact results in discomfort for the cat. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Puddles becomes reactive. Treats should be used to reward appropriate responses to physical attention. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, adult home only – Puddles appreciates petting on her head, but she does not appear to like being rubbed on her body. Due to her tendency to hiss and growl after being pet on her body, we feel that this cat will do best in an adult only home.
