05/23/2017 AT RISK MEMO
Puddin A1112064 is at risk due to behavior – Puddin does not seem to be thriving in the shelter environment. She can be social and interactive with her human caretakers, but she begins to hiss and growl during other interactions. She has not escalated or shown any aggression or other distance-increasing behaviors, but we believe it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible.

05/15/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
05/15/17 15:50 Basic Information: Puddin is a 1 year old female. She was given to her previous owner as a gift when she was 2 weeks old. She was surrendered because she has been peeing outside of her litter box for the past 3 days. The last time she went to the vet was 6 months ago. She has no known injuries or health concerns. Socialization: Around strangers Puddin is friendly and outgoing and when she plays with adults she is gentle. She’s spent time with children ages 5, 7 and 12. Around them she was relaxed and playful and gentle at play. Behavior: Puddin has never attempted to bite a person or animal. In car rides she is relaxed. For the past 3 days Puddin has been peeing outside her litter box daily. She has not been to the vet but her previous owner believes Puddin is going through changes. Puddin sits when her coat is brushed for a few minutes but then struggles to get away. She does the same when picked up. When placed in a carrier she hisses and struggles to go in. She isn’t bothered if she is disturbed while sleeping. For a New Family to Know: Puddin is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident and quiet with a high activity level. Her previous owner liked that she is sweet. When her previous owner was home, Puddin would tend to follow her around. She showed no interest in toys. She was kept mostly indoors but had access to the fire escape daily. At night she slept anywhere. She ate dry Friskies and is said to not like wet cat food. She is litter box trained and used a hooded litter box and clumping litter. She had a vertical carpet scratching post but never used it, she instead liked to scratch leather furniture. Behavior during intake: While in her carrier, Pudding meowed and sniffed extended hand. When put my hand closer she allowed me to pet her and head butted. She came out of her carrier easily and continued to head-butt. She rolled over while I pet her but flinched and squinted when I pulled my hand away and tapped my hand with her paw twice (without nails). She allowed me to collar her and pick her up. Once in the cage she was relaxed and laid down. When she got a female neighbor in the cage next to her she began to hiss. When I attempted to interact she hissed, growled, charged and swatted.

05/17/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Somewhat chatty CHARACTER TYPE: Sweet, Affectionate KNOWN HISTORY: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: Behavior toward strangers: friendly Behavior toward children: relaxed and playful and gentle at play Bite or Scratch history: none Litter box training: some accidents Other notes: described as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident and quiet with a high activity level. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 5/16/17- Seems very uncomfortable. Initially crouched in litter box, stiff posture. Constant grumbling and occasional hissing. Came to the front on approach, looking around. Repeatedly threatened to swat, but rarely actually extended paw, and didn’t use claws. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Puddin looks neutral, lying down on her cage bedding when approached by the assessor. Reaction to cage door opening: Puddin stands with tail up, engages the front, soliciting attention. Reaction to touch: Puddin leans into the assessor’s hand, joyfully rolls over and began to purr in place. Reaction to being picked up: She becomes antsy then jumps back into the cage. BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Average Puddin interacts with the observer, appreciates attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. This cat is showing behavior appropriate for new or experienced cat parents. POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Inappropriate elimination – Puddin previous owners report that she was eliminating urinating outside the litterbox for the past 3 days. Puddin was seen by a veterinarian and has no known medical issues. We are unaware of what, if any, modifications steps were taken to try and address this behavior in the home, so we cannot be sure what the trigger may have been or if this behavior may continue in a future home. However, we recommend that potential adopters be comfortable with management and modification techniques for elimination outside the litterbox should this behavior continue in a home environment. – Uncomfortable with pick up – Puddin did not appear to like being picked up during interactions. Please keep in mind there are many reasons why a cat may be uncomfortable with this type of handling and that this may not necessarily translate into a home environment. We recommend any future home with children be counseled in respecting the cat’s space and for the family to use care when picking her up, especially while she is still adjusting to her new home.
