06/19/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: PJ was brought in as a stray, so there is no information on her behavior in her previous home. She was quiet and alert upon intake, but allowed some handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – Tense in back of cage, did not allow handling, exam done in net, hissing, swatting ENRICHMENT NOTES: 06/18/17 Lying towards back of kennel with a tense body. Avoids eye contact for duration of session. Tolerates petting along her head and body while looking around the room and remaining otherwise motionless. Sniffs treats but doesn’t eat them as I watch. Needs more time to adjust. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is slightly re-arranged Reaction to assessor: PJ was calm and relaxed by the front. Reaction when softly spoken to: PJ pokes her head forward to sniff around. Reaction to cage door opening: PJ remains relaxed, but gets up and walks to the back of her kennel. Reaction to touch: PJ sniffs the assessor’s hand and allows gentle petting on her head and body, but becomes very stiff and tense when touched. She lies down when petting stops, but focuses on the assessor’s hand when touched along her body and freezes again. She does not display distance-increasing behaviors, but her tail is lowered and she tenses up and focuses on the assessor’s hand each time she is touched. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Calm, Independent RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, Adult Only Home – PJ tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
