Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward strangers: Fearful & hides Behavior toward children: Unknown Behavior toward cats: Spent time around other cats and was relaxed/playful Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Bite or Scratch history: None Litter box training: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Shy and fearful with a medium activity level. Other notes: Doesn’t mind being held but will struggle to get away when he’s had enough. Loves playing with stuffed mice toys. Percy does scratch the furniture and drapes so his owner purchased a carpeted scratching post. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Net required for handling ENRICHMENT NOTES: 04/25/17 Lying in back of kennel with a low body, head lowered onto the floor. He comes forward to sniff my hand and tolerates soft petting along his head and body, licking his lips and leaning his head in very gently. He watches my hand as I pass it along his back. Nervous – needs more time to adjust. Sprayed feliway. 04/26/17 Sitting in back of kennel crouched with alert eyes. He comes forward to head-butt me when I approach, then shrinks away right before he makes contact with me. He continues to do this as I approach him and begins to flick his tail. Tolerates petting along head and body, remaining tense and tail flicking. Unsure, but may have potential to warm up. Shows conflicted behavior. Sprayed feliway. Likes tuna! 04/27/17 Crouched in the back of the kennel with his paws folded, appears wary. Ears tilted forward, lip licks then turns his head away. Moves to the other side of the double kennel when the door opens. Wide eyes, focused on all movements. Extends body to sniff. Accepts touch, gently head butts for attention. Like soft, very gentle pets. The moment I applied any pressure or touched him on the rest of his body he backed away and hissed. Full body pilo-erection. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful- Percy has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only – Percy tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. He may have some behavioral issues that will need to be addressed in the home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
