Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: North was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Stressed, fearful, hissing. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 05/24/17 Sitting crouched in back of kennel. She tolerates petting along her head while backing away and licking her lips, body tense. May be uncomfortable due to injury. Limited interaction due to medical condition. 05/25/17 Lying in back of kennel with a tense face and eyes wide. Makes eye contact when spoken to, ears flattening. May be uncomfortable due to injury. Limited interaction due to medical condition. 05/26/17 Low body posture at the back of the kennel. Avoids eye contact, lip licks when spoken to softly. Not open to interacting. She remains motionless when the door opens. When I extended my hand out to make contact she quickly backed away and hissed. She swatted and . Her body is very tense, she seems very uncomfortable and continues low growling until I left the kennel. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish Please note that this cat has a severe medical condition so we may not be seeing any true behavior and behavior may change when the cat’s medical condition improves. POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – North has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner – North is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
