Hello, my name is Nino. My animal id is #18518. I am a desexed male gray tabby cat at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years old. – P
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 17-Jan-2018, with the surrender reason stated as person health – medical.
Original Location: 11372
Nino is at risk due to being diagnosed with an Upper Respiratory Infection and will likely require home rest and a series of antibiotics for up to 14 days. This is a contagious illness to other cats. Nino can go to an adult home only.

No History : Owner surrender Subjective: BARH Observed Behavior – Tense in cage, opened cage and allowed petting but fled from table, examined in net — very calm in net, allowed oral exam while partially in net Evidence of Cruelty seen – No Evidence of Trauma seen – No Objective P = WNL R = WNL BCS 7/9 EENT: Eyes clear, ears clean, no nasal or ocular discharge noted Oral Exam: Severe dental tartar/gingivitis, halotisis, tongue protrudes rostrally, during exam one of the left upper premolars fell out H/L: NSR, NMA, CRT < 2, Lungs clear, eupnic ABD: Non painful, no masses palpated U/G: Neutered MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, no masses noted, healthy hair coat CNS: Mentation appropriate – no signs of neurologic abnormalities Assessment: Overweight, dental disease Prognosis: Good prognosis with appropriate treatment/care Plan: Convenia 0.67ml SQ and simbadol 0.9ml SQ given. Rec dental prophylaxis and weight loss plan with placement. Monitor appetite, consider continuing simbadol if inappetant.

Objective EENT: Eyes clear, mydriatic, no nasal or ocular discharge noted H/L: Eupneic, normal RR/RE MSI: GHC CNS: Mentation appropriate – no signs of neurologic abnormalities Assessment: Inappetent Overweight Severe dental disease Prognosis: Good prognosis with appropriate treatment/care Plan: Continue simbadol 0.24mg/kg SQ SID x3d until 1/20 Start LRS 20ml/kg SQ SID x3d until 1/20 Start cerenia 1mg/kg SQ SID x3d until 1/20 Give one dose of mirtazapine 3.75mg PO Rec dental prophylaxis and weight loss plan with placement.

Recheck appetite – on LRS, cerenia, mirtazapine, buprenex for dental disease S/O: BAR. Tense, runs to other side of cage on approach. Eating wet food with excellent appetite. Normal urine in box EENT: Eyes clear, crusted mucoid nasal discharge HL: Normal thoracic auscultation, no sneezing observed INTEG: Full coat MS: Ambulatory x 4 UG: Neutered A: URI, dental disease, eating well P: Rec doxycycline 1.5ml PO q24 x 10 days. Excellent prognosis

How is this cat around children?: Nino has spent time with children ages 3 to 6 years old, around them Nino is curious and fearful.
How is this cat around other cats?: Nino is relaxed and affectionate around other cats.
How is this cat around dogs?: Nino is relaxed and affectionate around dogs.
Behavior Notes: Nino will often scratch on the furniture at home and will meow softly when riding in a car. Nino’s previous owner did not attempt to give Nino a bath, trim Nino’s nails or brush Nino’s coat. Nino enjoys being picked up/held, placed in a carrier and doesn’t mind being disturbed while resting/sleeping.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 01/18/18 Tense and nervous-low body posture. He lowers his head and tries to avoid eye contact. Flinches when touched, then curls up and shrinks his body. Tolerates petting gently along his back, but remains motionless and very wary. Needs more time to adjust. 01/21/18 Lying in litterbox, body low and tense. Tolerates petting along head for a brief moment before retreating through portal with a low body and tail. Pupils are dilated. Not interested in treats at the moment. Nervous, needs more time to adjust.

Reaction to assessor:: Nino is lying in back of kennel with a low, tense body, tail wrapped around his feet as the assessor approaches.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Nino avoids eye contact, eyes wide and pupils dilated when spoken to softly.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Nino remains very still and tense as the cage door opens.
Reaction to touch:: Nino tolerates petting briefly before quickly retreating through his portal with a low body and tail.

Potential challenges comments:: Nino has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.

Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
