A1118041 Newark – NHO determination; He was on DOH hold, but was released for rescue. He displayed fearful behavior throughout his stay in the shelter environment, trying to flee and hide from interactions. When petting is attempted, he displays distance-increasing behaviors to avoid contact. He has not warmed up to attention and will hiss and strike during interactions.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Hissing, regresses in carrier; will flee ENRICHMENT NOTES: 7/16/17 – Crouched in litter box, eyes dilated, tense posture. Started hissing when door opened. Sniffed assess-a-hand, kept hissing. Flattened ears and swatted when moved assess-a-hand away, then curled up tighter. Sprayed feliway. 7/17/17 – Just had cage cleaned, seems agitated. Hunched low in litter box, eyes dilated. Curled up tighter when door opened. Immediately bit offered assess-a-hand, no hissing. Sprayed feliway. 7/18/17 – Hunched in litter box, tense, eyes dilated. Started hissing and leaning back when door opened. Flattened ears, hissed, and struck offered assess-a-hand. Sprayed feliway. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Newark crouches in place and looks at the assessor with dilated eyes. Reaction when softly spoken to: Newark remains crouched in place. Reaction to cage door opening: Newark becomes alert and begins hissing. Reaction to touch: Newark hisses and swats at the assessor’s hand. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy, Timid, Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful Newark has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Newark is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Placement with a New Hope partner
