03/01/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Nacho was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. His finder did not have any interactions with him. He was fractious during intake and displayed fearful behavior; hissing, lip licking, and attempting to flee. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Hissing and striking in den, attempts to bite. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 02/27/17 Sitting in litter box, drooped over, head low, quiet and unmoving. Doesn’t look up when I approach or when I open the cage door. When I slowly extend hand he doesn’t lean in but he does sniff my fingers; doesn’t get up, remains motionless, quiet, head low. Not really ready for a lot of interaction yet, needs some time. Update: Remains lying in his litter box, quiet, unmoving. Didn’t react when I slowly extended my hand to him, but hissed and intently followed my hand when I gently reached to touch his head, wasn’t open to being touched at this time. 02/28/17 Was busy during the night, cage is a mess. Crouching outside box, quiet, head and eyes low, unmoving, calm. Doesn’t move or react when I open cage door and rearrange things a little and offer a fresh bowl of wet food. Starts eating, stays calm while I moved a couple more things around at the front of the cage. Moved the screen cover to the opposite side of his double kennel, the side with the bedding, so hopefully that’ll help him rest. He’s right by the door which is a really stressful location. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage was recently cleaned Reaction to assessor: Nacho was crouched over by the back with his head lowered. He looks at the assessor with almond-shaped eyes but appeared tense. Reaction when softly spoken to: Nacho makes eye contact, blinks, and then averts his gaze. Reaction to cage door opening: Nacho remains motionless. Reaction to touch: Nacho will sniff the assessor’s hand when extended slowly, but does not allow touch. He swats and hisses when petting was attempted. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Quiet, CHARACTER TYPE: Independent RECOMMENDATIONS: _x_ Placement with a New Hope partner – Nacho is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
