Details on my behavior are…
Behavior Condition: 5. Red
KNOWN HISTORY:: Myrka was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: 02/22/18 Very tense and crouched in corner of cage. Attempted to place in freeman net but cat lunged forward and escaped from cage.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 02/22/18 Hunched in back of kennel, face squished against kennel wall and whites of eyes visible. He watches the bear-claw as it reaches towards him, remaining very still, then gives it one hard swat before it can make contact with him. Uncomfortable, needs more time to adjust. 02/25/18 Hunched in back of kennel, face and body tense. Body is completely frozen – “scared stiff” as eyes look around the room. Rapid breathes when spoken to. Not interested in treats at the moment – may be too focused on me and environment. Limited interaction due to stress.
Cage Condition:: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:: Myrka was tense and crouched inside her litter box, watching the assessor with wide, dilated eyes.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Myrka stays motionless in her litter box and starts to low growl.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Myrka rises up out of her litter box and low growls.
Reaction to touch:: Myrka’s ears bend flat, she arches her body and strikes when approached. She displays distance increasing behaviors and currently doesn’t allow any handling.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Myrka has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New hope only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Myrka is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
