09/20/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Mist was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: At back of feral den, eyes wide, wary ENRICHMENT NOTES: 09/16/17 Curled up tight in the back of the kennel with her tail wrapped around her body. Ears bent slightly, wide eyes focused on all movements. Seems a little skittish, her eyes dart around. She remains completely immobile and tolerates petting on her head and along her body. Very wary of her surroundings, constantly flinching whenever she hears something going on outside the kennel. Not interested in treats EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Mist was crouched and wary on top the kuranda bed. Reaction when softly spoken to: Mist’s ears bend flat and she starts to low growl. Reaction to cage door opening: Mist hisses and spits. Reaction to touch: Mist arches her back, hisses and displays distance increasing behaviors when approached. She seems very uncomfortable and currently doesn’t allow handling. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Mist has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner – Mist is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
