04/16/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Midnight was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. She did not allow handling during intake. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – Fleeing behavior. Hisses when cornered. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 04/08/17 Fearful. Tense body, crouched. Wide, dilated eyes focused on me. Flinches and shifts away when the door opens. Not ready to interact today. Ears bent flat, lip licks constantly. Left her alone. 04/10/17 Crouched over with low body towards back of kennel. Alert, but stays motionless when cage door opens. Lowers body when offered hand, then lip licks and looks around. Retreats into other kennel and hides, but will poke head back out after some time. Still unsure. 04/12/17 Resting on top of perch when I approach – cute! Ears flatten when spoken to, eyes wide and darting around the room. When I open the kennel door she jumps off of her perch and hides underneath it. I did not persist further interaction – still frightened. 04/16/17 Lying on top of perch with a relaxed body. Eyes widen when I open the kennel door and she shrinks away as I approach her. She dodges my hand left and right as I move my arm towards her, looking past my hand and into the room behind me. She’s not interested in further interaction today. By the end of the interaction she has retreated to the bottom of her towel covered perch to hide. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish, Independent RECOMMENDATIONS: – Placement with a New Hope partner – Midnight is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. She is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
