***SAFE 10/26/17*** SWEET AND SHY MICKEY ALLOWS GENTLE PETTING AND NEEDS A RESCUE ANGEL TONIGHT! MICKEY is a 6 yr old neutered boy whose elderly owner died. He was a gift to his owner as a kitten. Once owner passed, cat behaved differently and rather than wife trying to befriend and comfort this grieving boy, she whisked him away to the kill shelter. Mickey hides under his blanket. He has been improving but the shelter is no place for a sad kitty. PLEASE GIVE MICKEY A CHANCE FOR A HAPPY ENDING TO HIS STORY AND RESERVE THIS HANDSOME BOY BY NOON!!

Details on my behavior are…
Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow
KNOWN HISTORY:: The previous owner has owned the cat for 6 years. Her husband received it as a gift from a friend when the cat was just a kitten. The cat has always been indoors in there care. Once husband died the cat acted differently towards her. There was limited profile information gathered from the previous owner due to a language barrier.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Before giving chemical restraint, patient did not show any aggression did nit hiss, was very timid and scared
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/09/17 Crouched in back of kennel, completely hidden beneath blanket. He makes eye contact with a low body, head lowered as I lift the blanket to expose his face. He then tries to back away into his blanket in an attempt to cover himself again as I reach towards him. Tolerates petting while continuing to back away and try to hide. Nervous and scared. Not interested in treats at the moment. Sprayed feliway. 10/11/17 Hidden beneath blanket, body low and completely concealed. He lifts his head as I lift the blanket and looks around the room. He tolerates petting while lowering his body and attempting to scoot backwards into his blanket. He eats the treats I place down in front of him so I click and reward each time he steps forward out of his blanket and each time he remains calm without trying to cover himself. I place the cover back over his head and spray feliway. 10/12/17 Lying in back of kennel, completely concealed by blanket. He growls when I begin to lift his blanket. Once His head is exposed he begins to sniff the air and his body softens slightly. He leans in gently for petting and allows touch along his head and body. He backs away into his blanket whenever he hears a loud noise or when someone approaches his kennel. Focused on environment. Ate treats during interaction today. Showing improvement! Sprayed feliway.
Cage Condition:: Cat is hiding under
Reaction to assessor:: Mickey is hiding beneath his blanket as the assessor approaches, body and head completely concealed.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Mickey remains still and covered when spoken to.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Mickey begins to growl from beneath his blanket as the cage door opens.
Reaction to touch:: Mickey begins to sniff the air, body softening slightly as the cover is pulled back from his head. He allows petting along his head and body, ears shifting forward as he leans in with his head. He tries to back himself beneath the blanket again when he hears a loud noise.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Sweet,Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Mickey has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experience
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Other
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Experience Mickey tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
