***SAFE 07/12/16***MELLOW MEL IS A 10 YR OLD HANDSOME BOY WHO LIVED HIS ENTIRE LIFE WITH ONE OWNER – WHO NOW DUMPED HIM FOR “PERSONAL PROBLEMS” MEL was found as a kitten and was nursed back to health. His ex-owner said he has lived with him ever since – until now. MEL’S owner said “personal problems” but if you read his entire bio it seems MEL has had some litter box problems. We guess that a vet wasn’t in the picture here to find out why since now poor MEL is sitting facing DEATH even though he is a sweet and loving cat. A volunteer writes: This senior gent is a bit on the shy side however, once he warms up, he appreciates being held and petted. Mel is the ultimate lap cat – and believe me, there is nothing that brings more joy than to have a cat comfy on your lap. It is also said that he is shy amongst strangers – who isn’t? Experienced cat parents (those with lots of experience with cats) would be the best parents since they would know to be patient and extra kind to allow Mel to adjust to his new forever home. MEL NEEDS A RETIREMENT HOME AND A VET EVAL TO MAKE SURE ALL IS OK WITH HIM. BUT NOW WITH THE SHELTER COLD, THE ACC IS GOING TO MAKE SURE HE DIES ON TUESDAY – CAN YOU STOP THE ACC BY OFFERING TO FOSTER OR ADOPT! HURRY AND EMAIL [email protected] FOR RESCUE INFO NOW!

06/25/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
6/25/16 6:27pm BASIC INFORMATION Mel is a 10 year old black and white DSH that the owner has owned his whole life. SOCIALIZATION Mel has lived with two adults and we are unsure how he is around other animals, nor children. The previous owners found him in the street from when he was just a couple of weeks old and they nursed him to health. He was unable to eat on his own upon the previous owners finding him. BEHAVIOR Mel is described as a timid cat, shy with strangers at first but as long as you give him a little time to warm up though, he is affectionate. Although Mel is not declawed, he has never scratched on the furniture in the home and has been a good cat, per the owner. When strangers would come over, he would run and hide, but he has never hissed or shown any other concerning behavior. He did not enjoy being placed in the carrier prior to coming into the care center. FOR NEW FAMILIES TO KNOW Mel was only feed wet food, Friskies brand. The previous owners state that Mel is a great cat, but needs someone who will be willing and able to manage his litterbox issues.

06/30/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Mel came to the shelter surrendered by an owner who described him as affectionate, timid and shy with strangers at first but as long as you give him a little time to warm up though. Upon intake, Mel was nervous but allowed handling. Reaction to assessor: Mel does not approach but is soft and relaxed. Reaction when softly spoken to: Mel continues to lay, body relaxed and soft. Reaction to cage door opening: Mel remains motionless and does not respond. Reaction to touch: Mel seems indifferent about being touched. Reaction to pick up: Mel is tolerant of this type of handling and seems to really enjoy sitting on the assessor’s lap. He enjoyed petting; he curled up and appeared very comfortable, soft and relaxed. Placement Determination: Experience Mel appeared a bit shy and indifferent about being touched but really seemed to enjoy being held. Mel’s previous owners stated that for the last few years Mel has been urinating outside of the litter box. In the care center, Mel has been observed using the litter box at times and sometimes he has not. We advise potential adopters to be aware that this behavior may continue in a home environment, and that they be comfortable with management and modification techniques for this behavioral challenge. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents
