KNOWN HISTORY: Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward children: Unknown Behavior toward strangers: Friendly Behavior toward cats: Affectionate and playful Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Bite history: None Scratch history: None Litter box training: Hooded with crystal litter Energy level/descriptors: Medium EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cat hiding under bedding Reaction to assessor: Matthew is hiding under his bedding on approach. Reaction when softly spoken to: Matthew remains hidden. Reaction to cage door opening: Matthew remains hidden Reaction to touch: Matthew remains frozen in place, looks at assessor with dilated eyes. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 2/16/17: At the back, actually under bogus paper. Eyes completely dilated. Held immobile when uncovered, looked away when touched. Sprayed feliway. 2/19/17: Hiding under bedding. Strong smell, urine? Remained immobile, eyes fully dilated, when uncovered. No response to touch, seems very fearful. Sprayed feliway. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Attempts to flee upon examination ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy, Skittish, RECOMMENDATIONS: _x_ Experienced, adult home only POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: _x_ Fearful Matthew has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him/her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Experienced, Adults Only Matthew tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to his/her new home and family at his own pace.
