07/24/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Mary was brought in with limited information on her behavior in her previous home. Her previous owner reports she was difficult to get into a carrier, but has never bitten or scratched anyone. She mostly kept to herself in the home. She allowed handling during intake, but she struggled to escape when being collared. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – calm, allows handling EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Mary was lying down, alert and had a low body posture. Reaction when softly spoken to: Mary looks at the assessor and lip licks. Reaction to cage door opening: Mary becomes alert, but remains motionless. Reaction to touch: Mary sniffs the assessor’s hand when slowly placed in front of her, but lowers her head for petting. She shifts her body around and wraps her tail tightly against her body, but doesn’t seem to mind petting on her head and body. She remains tense throughout the interaction and seems wary of her surroundings. Reaction to being picked up: Mary is tense during pick up, but remains calm when held. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy, Calm, Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful – Mary displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may be uncomfortable with extended handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced cat parent – Mary tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to her new home and family. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to her stress levels in the care center, we recommend any future home with young children conduct a thorough interaction before adopting.
