08/15/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Quiet and nervous, hunched down, hissing ENRICHMENT NOTES: 08/13/17 Lying behind litter box with a flat body, ears flattened and face completely hidden behind box. He tolerates petting along his head and body while trembling, body remaining flat. He shifts his weight and lifts his head to watch my hand, ears tilted and eyes wide. Face is tense. Very scared and uncomfortable. Needs more time to adjust. 08/14/17 Lying in litter box with a low, tense body. Ears are flattened. I place some treats next to him, which he sniffs but does not eat. Not comfortable enough to them in front of me yet. He tolerates gentle petting along his head and body while turning to watch my hand and hissing, ears and whiskers pulled back. Eyes are wide. Needs more time to adjust. 08/15/17 Flinches when I pulled the cage cover up. Low body posture, pressed up against the back of the cage. Slow blinks when spoken to softly, ears bent slightly. Seems uncomfortable. He grumbles and curls up behind his litter box when the door opens. He arches his back, his ears bend flat and he displays distance increasing behaviors when attempting to interact with him. Needs more time to adjust. Not interested in treats or tuna. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Marty has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner – Marty is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
