ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/05/17 Lying in back of kennel with a low, tense body. She makes eye contact with flat ears and backs away as the bear-claw reaches towards her, face tense and eyes squinted shut. She swats the bear-claw out of the way before it can touch her. Uncomfortable, needs more time to adjust. 11/06/17 Lying in back of kennel with a flat body, head lowered onto kennel floor. Makes eye contact and hisses. She raises her head and paw as I reach towards her and gives the bear-claw two hard swats before it can reach her. Not accepting of interaction at this time. Not interested in treats at the moment. Needs more time to adjust.

Reaction to touch:: Marilyn low growls, arches her back and displays distance increasing behaviors when approached. She’s tense, very uncomfortable and currently doesn’t allow any handling.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Marilyn has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New hope only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Marilyn is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, bite, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
