I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 20-Jan-2018, with the surrender reason stated as animal health – other.

Mariano is at risk for medical reasons, having been diagnosed with an Upper Respiratory Infection, which is contagious to other cats. Behaviorally, we have no concerns for Mariano, whom we believe would be suitable for most homes.

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue
Upon intake, Mariano turned his body away from the door of his carrier. Mariano allowed me to pet him and he licked his lips a few times. Mariano turned around and allowed me to pet him on the head. Mariano walked out of his carrier and allowed me to collar him and pick him up and place him inside a kennel. Once inside, Mariano retreated to the back and did not move from that spot.

Basic Information:: Mariano is a 4 year old male black and white domestic short haired cat. Mariano was found as a stray 4 years ago and has lived with previous owner ever since. Mariano was surrendered because he scratched previous owner’s niece and because he is constantly eating plastic and becoming sick. Mariano has no injuries or known health issues and has not been taken to a vet.
Previously lived with:: Mariano previously lived with two adults
How is this cat around strangers?: Mariano is calm around strangers and will approach them. Mariano is said to ignore strangers.
How is this cat around children?: Mariano has previously spent time with children aged 4 and 12 years old. Mariano does not play or interact with children.
How is this cat around other cats?: Mariano has never interacted with other cats.
How is this cat around dogs?: Mariano previously lived with an adult male large breed dog. Mariano is relaxed for the most part but will sometimes scratch at random moments.
Behavior Notes: Mariano has never been given a bath or had his coat brushed and is not bothered when his nails are trimmed. Mariano is not bothered when being picked up or held but will try to get away after a few minutes. When being put into a carrier, Mariano will try to pull away to avoid getting in. Mariano is not bothered when being disturbed as he sleeps.
Bite history:: Mariano has never bitten another animal or human but has scratched a child and the resident dog.

Medical Notes: Mariano has no known medical issues.
For a New Family to Know: Mariano is a friendly, shy, independent and quiet cat. When at home, Mariano tends to be in his favorite spot. Mariano was kept as an indoors only cat and would sleep on his owner’s bed. Mariano was fed Meow Mix dry cat food. Mariano is litter box trained and used an uncovered box with clumping cat litter. Mariano did not have a scratching post and would scratch on the owner’s leather couches.

He usually reaches out and swipes when people run past him, unintentionally scratching the child when the child ran past him. Litter box training: Yes, used an uncovered box with clumping cat litter. Energy level/descriptors: Mariano is a friendly, shy, independent and quiet with a low activity level. Other notes: Mariano is not bothered when being picked up or held but will try to get away after a few minutes.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: 01/21/18 Observed Behavior – Tense, but allows all handing
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 1/21/18 Resting under kuranda, eyes a little dilated. Came slowly forward when offered treats, seemed unsure. Ate a few, would not come all the way to the front, retreated back under kuranda bed when done, some lip licking. Lured back out with more treats, started eating dry food. Seemed very wary of room noise, abruptly started hypersalivating. Crouched in place, recovered after a few minutes. Allowed and leaned slightly into pets, needs time to acclimate. 1/22/18 Huge improvement! Crouched under kuranda bed, eyes somewhat dilated. Came slowly forward on approach with minimal coaxing, body held low. Sniffed hand between the bars, ate a few offered treats. Stayed at the front when door opened. Head-butted, leaned hard into pets, purred. Stood up straight after door closed, posture soft, started eating wet food. 1/23/18 Even braver today! Came to the front on approach without coaxing, soft eyes and body, started rubbing against the bars. Leaned and arched into pets, purred, extended neck for throat scratches. Stayed at the front after door closed, looked around. Seems much more confident now. 1/24/18 Resting on top of kuranda bed today, soft eyes and body. Lay in place when door opened, leaned into pets, purred, closed eyes. 1/25/18 Resting on top of kuranda bed again, soft eyes and body. Lay in place when door opened, leaned and arched into pets, purred. Ate offered treats. Later, came and sat at the front, occasional soft meowing for attention. 1/29/18 Grooming upon approach, but pauses when coaxed and approaches the front and rubs his cheeks on the door. He accepts petting and leans in for rubs while looking around at his surroundings. Did well today. 02/01/18 Calm, relaxed, and friendly by the front. Stays in place and sniffs around when coaxed, but accepts petting and lifts rear. Really mellow and calm, doesn’t mind attention at all and will stay in the same spot. Doing well.

Reaction when softly spoken to:: Mariano pauses and approaches the front to rub his cheeks on the door.

Reaction to being picked up:: Mariano remains calm, but wiggles after a moment to be put back down.
