MACK – 19261
Safe - 2-1-2018 Staten Island
SAFE 2/1/18 Toby and Mack appear to be bonded. When separated in different dens and kennels, Mack stress meowed and displayed anxious behavior. Once placed in the same kennel, Toby and Mack laid together and seemed very relaxed and comforted. Mack especially appears more calm when around his house mate (easier to pet in kennel together then when they were separated).
It is difficult to tell whether or not their behavior is due to stress from coming into the shelter, or due to separation. Since they appear to appreciate each other’s company we’re keeping them housed together during their stay, however we have yet to determine whether they are indeed bonded. Behavior will continue to monitor them during their stay, but we’d like to give them time to acclimate before separating them again. We will separate the two later this week and record their behavior during the separation. If they continue to display signs of increasing stress or anxiety during separation, we recommend these two have placement together.

Mack is described as friendly, affectionate, mellow and talkative. He has a medium activity and likes to play with balls, string toys and wand toys. In the home, Mack likes to follow the owner around from room to room and sit on the owner’s lap and snuggle. He was kept indoors only and is litter box. In the home, he used an uncovered litter box with clumping litter. Owner had a scratching post made of cardboard that Mack would like to use frequently but would sometimes scratch on the couch. In the home, Mack was fed both wet and dry food brand 9 Lives.
Behavior Notes:
Behavior during intake: Mack had a soft body during intake. Counselor was able to transfer from box to carrier, scan for a microchip, collar and take a picture without any issues. When offered wet food, Mack began to head bunt the counselors hand and allowed to be pet on the body.
