04/16/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: Adults and children Behavior toward strangers: Nervous and hides from them for about an hour, but will come out after. Behavior toward children: Respectful and sometimes playful. He is quicker to warm up to children than adults, playing gently. Behavior toward cats or dogs: Unknown Bite or Scratch history: None Litter box training: Yes, uses a hooded litter box with clumping litter Energy level/descriptors: Liger has a high level of energy and loves to be around his family members and follow them around. Other notes: He is not bothered by having his nails trimmed, being brushed, picked up or put into a carrier. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Subjective: Hissing and growling, swats and pounces. Used Freeman net for exam. Very limited exam. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Liger was inside of a den, facing the front from within inside. Reaction when softly spoken to: Liger looks out from a hole on the den and had almond-shaped eyes. He appeared alert initially, but he averts his gaze after. Reaction to cage door opening: Liger becomes stiff and alert. Reaction to touch: Liger focuses on the assessor’s hand and hisses. He sniffs the hand slowly and allows gentle petting with an extremely slow approach, but appears uncomfortable. He shifts away from contact after and grumbles, blinking and lip licking. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Cannot assess VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy, Sweet with owners POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful – Liger has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced cat parent – Liger tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. His previous owners report he warms up quickly to kids, but due to his stress level in the shelter, we recommend any future home with children should conduct a thorough interaction before adopting.
