10/23/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Kiki’s previous owner reports she is shy around strangers and will usually hide until they leave. She is nervous around children and may scratch if they play too roughly with her. She has lived with another cat, but she would hiss, growl, and swipe at the other cat. She enjoys being brushed and only allows the owner to pick her up and carry her. She will struggle and may scratch if someone else tries. She has a low activity level but will randomly jump out of hiding places and run towards people walking by, sometimes scratching them. Reaction to assessor: Kiki comes to the front and is calm, relaxed, and friendly. Reaction when softly spoken to: Kiki solicits attention and rubs all over the cage door. Reaction to cage door opening: Kiki remains soft and relaxed. Reaction to touch: Kiki head-butts and leans in for petting. Her tail pilo-erects and waves from side to side, but she continues to solicit attention and doesn’t display any further reaction. Reaction to being picked up: Kiki shifts away from the assessor to avoid pick up each time pick up was attempted. Kiki’s previous owner reports she has been eliminating outside the litter box every day. Her owners has tried using different types of litter boxes and litter, but she continued to have accidents. Please note that Kiki’s previous living situation may have contributed to the behavior seen (she lived in a home with another cat she did not get along with and we are unsure how many litter boxes were provided and/or where in the home these litter boxes were placed). We cannot be sure whether this behavior will continue in a different home environment, but we recommend that potential adopters be comfortable with management and modification techniques for elimination outside the litter box should this behavior continue. We also recommend that Kiki be provided with numerous litter boxes throughout the house as she adjusts to her new living space. The extra boxes can be removed as she learns the space and successfully defecates in her main litterbox(es). Behavior Determination: Experienced Kiki interacts with the observer, appreciates attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. Her previous parents report she had spurts of energy and may accidentally scratch as people walk by. We recommend fishing pole-type toys for play as they allow for vigorous and stimulating exercise to drain her energy and prevent unwanted behaviors, while keeping human hands at a safe distance.
