12/03/17
Standing upright in back of kennel, body tense and eyes alert. He tolerates petting along his head and body while flinching his head away from my hand and squinting his eyes. Uncomfortable with touch at this time – needs more time to adjust.
12/04/17
Sitting in back of kennel, eyes alert and ears forward. He steps forward and raises his tail as the cage door opens, then comes forward as if to give my hand a head-butt. He backs away once touched, then leans in and abruptly raises his tail. Retreats into cubby to create distance, then head-butts kennel wall when spoken to. Unsure but curious. Has potential to warm up.
Cage Condition:
Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:
Kia was lying down by the back of his cubby, eyes focused on the assessor.
Reaction when softly spoken to:
Kia slowly approaches the front before rubbing his cheeks against the door.
Reaction to cage door opening:

Reaction to touch:
Kia lip licks when approached, but inches forward. He sniffs the assessor’s hand, and then head-butts and leans in for attention. He grows more confident and raises his tail, allowing all petting.

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:

Potential challenges comments:
Rough play – Kia appreciates petting and attention, but may play roughly. He appears to have a lot of energy and tends to play without retracting claws. Although this behavior is motivated by play, it is important to note that this behavior occurs. We recommend daily rigorous play with fishing pole-type toys and ending play sessions before he becomes overstimulated or if he begins to target human hands or feet. We also recommend using puzzle feeders to keep him engaged and to exercise his brain in addition to his body.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:
Average
Behavior Asilomar
H – Healthy
RECOMMENDATIONS:
No young children
Recommendations comments:
Kia interacts with the observer and appreciates attention, but he has a tendency to play rough according to his previous owner. His behavior remains suitable for an adopter with an average amount of experience, provided the adopter is aware of these behaviors and is able to comfortably manage them. Though we believe this cat is displaying behaviors appropriate for new or experienced cat parents, he may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:
Kia interacts with the observer, appreciates attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. This cat is showing behavior appropriate for cat parents with an average amount of experience.
