KNOWN HISTORY:
Indoor and/or Outdoor? Kato was admitted as a stray so little or no known history was provided
Litter box training: Y
EVALUATION:
Cage Condition: no change
Reaction to assessor: Ignored completely was sleeping
Reaction when softly spoken to: Did not come forward but looked up
Reaction to cage door opening: Remained soft and relaxed
Reaction to touch: Allowed assess-a-hand and gloved hand pets
Reaction to being picked up: Not tolerating began lip licking and distancing
ENRICHMENT NOTES:
Resting at the back, a little tense, eyes dilated. Tolerated brief pets, then retreated and pressed against back wall.
03/02/17
Lying down with squinted eyes, blinking softly when spoken to. He becomes nervous when opening the cubby door and attempts to press against the back wall. He flinches before I touched him, but accepts petting with a slow approach. He will shift around during the interaction, but looks unsure and uncomfortable, curling up and lip licking a lot. He comes forward when given some space and will look at me with soft eyes. Needs some time to warm up.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: allows handling
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back
VOCAL: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: Shy
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:
X Uncomfortable with pick up – Kato did not appear to like being picked up during his behavior evaluation. Please keep in mind there are many reasons why a cat may be uncomfortable with this type of handling and that this may not necessarily translate into a home environment. We recommend any future home with children be counseled in respecting the cat’s space and for the family to use care when picking him up, especially while he is still adjusting to his new home.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
_X_ Experienced cat parent – Kato tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
