08/15/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY During intake June was timid and didn’t allow handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Nervous. Good for all medical handling. Did not hiss, strike, or try to bite. Did not need net to restrain. Tried to flee after prolonged restraint. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 08/13/17 Lying behind litter box in a neutral body position, ears forward. She tolerates petting along her head and body while backing away and tilting her ears, body tense and low. 08/14/17 Bogus paper is all torn up and litter box looks like it’s been scratched or chewed on. She’s crouched in the back of kennel, making eye contact with ears forward. She comes forward slowly, body low, as I’m unlocking the kennel door, then backs away once I open it. She tolerates petting briefly before retreating through the portal with a low body. Sniffs treats I place down but isn’t interested in eating them yet. Curious but still uncomfortable and unsure. Ears remain forward and she maintains eye contact throughout interaction. 08/15/17 Crouched at the front of the cage, head low. Her eyes dart around and she appears wary of her surroundings. She keeps her tail tucked under her body and she backs away when I tried talking to her softly. Alert- eyes fully dilated. Stays next to the porthole, quickly shifts away when I extended my hand forward. She allows brief contact before retreating. Seems very uncomfortable, needs a hidey box or kuranda bed. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – June has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only – June tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
