KNOWN HISTORY:
Julie was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
04/28/18
Quiet but seems curious, allows all handling with minimal restraint
ENRICHMENT NOTES:
04/29/18
Lying beneath kuranda bed, body low and fluffy tail wrapped around feet. She sniffs the bear-claw as I push it towards her and paws at it twice, claws unextened and ears forward. Tolerates petting along head and body while whipping head back to smell the scratcher, eyes wide. Curious but unsure – may have potential to warm up.
04/30/18
Lying beneath kuranda bed, body low and tense. Pokes head out as kennel door opens and hisses, ears flattened. Begins to growl, then hisses again. Begins to eat treat, but drops it from mouth and focuses on me when I don’t close the kennel door. Swats at my glove when I reach towards her with a high value treat. Uncomfortable today, needs time to adjust. I made her lvl 2 volunteer only.
Cage Condition:
Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:
Julie was tense and lying down completely flat on top her kuranda bed.
Reaction when softly spoken to:
Julie lip licks and slowly turns her head away towards the wall.
Reaction to cage door opening:
Julie tenses up and hisses.
Reaction to touch:
Julie’s ears bend flat, she hisses and arches her body when approached. She hisses, displays distance increasing behaviors and currently doesn’t allow any handling.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:
Laid back
VOCAL:
Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE:
Skittish
Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:
Fearful
Potential challenges comments:
Julie has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:
New hope only
Behavior Asilomar
TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:
None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:
Julie is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
