KNOWN HISTORY:
Jin was brought in as a stray, so there is no information on their behavior history or tendencies in their previous home. Finder stated that the cat was fearful in the 8 days the cat was in the home. He hid but sometimes came out for food and meow. He slowly warmed up and rub for attention but retrieved back to hiding. During intake Jin was in front of the cat cage but retrieved back when attempted to pet and tried to hide.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
04/20/18
Observed Behavior -jumped at handlers face, feral type escape behavior, biting at net and examiners hands

ENRICHMENT NOTES:
04/20/18
Cage was completely rearranged. Low body posture, trying to hide behind the litter box. Pupils dilated, tolerates petting briefly with the bear claw. Whips around and hisses. Needs more time to adjust.

04/22/18
Lying in litterbox with a tense body, eyes wide. Pupils are dilated. Tolerates petting along head and body with the bear-claw while turning head slowly to watch, fur along back twitching. Not too interested in treats at the moment. Unsure, needs more time to adjust.

04/23/18
Lying beneath kuranda bed, body concealed by draped towel. He hisses and begins to growl as I reach towards him with the bear-claw. Swats at it before it can touch him. Not interested in treats at the moment, may be too focused on me. Limited interaction due to stress. Needs time to adjust.

Cage Condition:
Cage is slightly re-arranged

Reaction to assessor:
Jin looks at the assessor and looks around; his ears were slightly tilted to the side.

Reaction when softly spoken to:
Jin looks at the assessor and his eyes dart around the room, alert.

Reaction to cage door opening:
Jin becomes stiff and alert, but remains in place.

Reaction to touch:
Jin leans forward to sniff the assessor’s hand, but was hesitant of touch and shifts his head away. He allows petting with a slow approach and looks away, but tenses up and focuses on the assessor’s hand when pet along his body and lip licks.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:
Moderate

VOCAL:
Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE:
Shy

Curious

Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:
Fearful

Potential challenges comments:
Jin has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:
Experienced, adult only

Behavior Asilomar
TM – Treatable-Manageable

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:
Jin tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
