MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Observed Behavior: timid but sweet, enjoys petting but tense when handled.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 12/19/17 [Clicker training] Jerry was crouched over in her cubby, watching movement in the room. She appears timid, but shows interest in tuna puree and will lick it gently from my finger. She hisses when I initially extended my hand to pet her, but allowed gentle touch with a slow approach. Rewarded each time she allowed touch and she slowly warms up each time. She is still tense and cautious of her surroundings, but doesn’t mind attention. Sweet lady, just needs more positive reinforcement. 12/21/17 [Clicker training] Hisses when the cage door opens and curls her body up. She is wary, but shows interest in tuna. She inches forward and eats tuna when offered. She was a bit hesitant of touch, backing away whenever hand was extended, but accepts it and relaxes some. With more repetition and reward every time she allowed petting, she doesn’t seem as tense anymore or focused on her surroundings. She even licked my hand a few times! When training ends, she still appears wary, but sits upright and looks around with calm eyes. Doing better!
Cage Condition:: Cage is slightly re-arranged
Reaction to assessor:: Jerry sits crouched in her litter box, eyes dilated and looking around.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Jerry looks at the assessor, remains tense.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Jerry hisses once and retreats a few steps, then leans forward to sniff the assessor’s hand.
Reaction to touch:: Jerry leans and arches into the stroke, but remains wary.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Sweet,Skittish
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Jerry has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experience
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children
Recommendations comments:: Jerry interacts with the observer and appreciates attention, but she has a tendency to become tense around loud noises. Her behavior remains suitable for an experienced adopter, provided the adopter is aware of these behaviors and is able to comfortably manage them. Though we believe this cat is displaying behaviors appropriate for experienced cat parents, she may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Jerry tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
