I came in the shelter as a OWNER SUR on 10/29/2016 from NY 10314, owner surrender reason stated was PET HEALTH.

10/29/16 16:42 Basic Information: Isabella is a 12 year old spayed female DSH that has no past or current medical issues that the owner is aware of. Owner has had Isabella for 12 years but had to surrender due to pet health and temperament. Socialization: According to the owner, around strangers Isabella is shy. When someone first approaches her and tries to pet her, she will hiss and swat. Owner has a 2 yr old grandson who would come over the house & stated that Isabella was fearful and would either try to hide or hiss at the grandchild. Owner had another cat in the home & stated that the 2 cats would chase each other in the home & play together. Isabella has never been around a dog therefore behavior is unknown. Isabella has never bit another animal or person while in the care of the owner. Behavior: In the car, Isabella was nervous. If owner would try to brush her coat, pick her up/hold her, or put Isabella into a carrier, she would struggle to get away and hiss. If someone would approach her and disturb her while she was sleeping, Isabella would hiss and scratch the person. Owner has never tried to give her a bath or trim her nails therefore behavior is unknown. For a New Family to Know: Isabella is described as mellow, independent and quiet with a low activity level. In the home, she liked to be in the same room as the owner. Isabella enjoys playing with balls. She was kept indoors only & is litter box trained. Isabella used a hooded litter box with sand litter in the home. Owner did not have a scratching post in the home but stated that Isabella would scratch on furniture, walls and doors in the home. She was fed dry food only brand name Purina. Behavior during intake: Isabella was lip licking during intake. When I went to transfer her from carrier to den, she started hissing and growling. In the den when I tried to open the door, she started growling, lip licking and trying to flee therefore I was unable to collar.

11/05/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY

Isabella came to the shelter surrendered by an owner who describes her as mellow, independent and quiet with a low activity level. When in the home, she liked to be in the same room as the owner. Reaction to assessor: Isabella was trying to hide, body stiff. Reaction when softly spoken to: Isabella continues to hide, lip licking. Reaction to cage door opening: Isabella retreats, ears back, body stiff. Reaction to touch: Isabella swats at assessor and tries to bite, did not allow any petting at all. Placement Determination: New Hope Only Isabella is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. Isabella is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
