01/30/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
01/30/17 15:33 On intake, Hope crawled right out of her founder’s carrier and walked right into one of ours. Counselor then opened the carrier door to let her back out for pictures and collaring but she did not walk out on her own. Counselor slowly put her hand in and Hope sniffed it and allowed counselor to pet her head. She gently lifted the back of the carrier and Hope came out the rest of the way. She allowed counselor to collar but hissed when counselor petted her back and turned her around gently for pictures. She did not make any other defensive remarks though (ie swatting, biting). She stood still for pictures. When carrier was presented again, Hope walked in on her own.

02/14/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Hope was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. She sniffed the counselor’s hand during intake and allowed them to pet her on her head. She allowed some handling, but hissed when touched on her back. She did not display any other reaction. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Calm, looks around, allows handling but hisses and growls when abdomen palpated. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Hope remains calm and relaxed by the front. Reaction when softly spoken to: Hope makes eye contact with the assessor and starts to breathe rapidly. Reaction to cage door opening: Hope becomes alert, but remains calm. Reaction to touch: Hope looks at the assessor’s hand and swipes without using nails when petting was attempted. She hisses afterwards and wraps her tail closely to her body. She blinks and lip licks afterwards, and doesn’t show interest in interacting. She will swipe again if the assessor’s hand comes close to her. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Timid POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: _x_ Fearful – Hope has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: _x_ Experienced, adult home only – Hope tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. Her behavior appears to have changed during her stay in the care center and she gives clear signs when she does not wish to interact with her human caretakers. We do not believe this behavior will translate in a home environment, but due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to her new home and family at her own pace.
