MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Frightened, hissing, will flee
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/31/17 Lying behind litter box with a low, tense body. Ears are titled. He tolerates petting along his head and body while turning to smell my hand and licking his lips. Needs more time to adjust. 11/01/17 Lying behind kennel with a low, tense body. Eyes are wide and ears are flat. He sniffs the treats I place in front of him but isn’t comfortable enough to eat them during our interaction yet. He tolerates petting along his head and body while backing away and shifting his weight, ears flattening further. Nervous – needs more time to adjust.
Cage Condition:: Cage is slightly re-arranged
Reaction to assessor:: Haze was tense, alert and crouched in the back of the kennel.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Haze is alert and his eyes dart around the kennel looking for an exit.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Haze flinches then quickly retreats to the other side of the double kennel.
Reaction to touch:: Haze starts breathing rapidly then curls up and shrinks his body when approached by the assessor. He keeps his head and body lowered, appears very uncomfortable but tolerates petting with a very slow approach. After a few soft pets his ears bend flat and he grumbles as a warning when he wants to be left alone.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: haze has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Haze tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
