P: Based on chart review and no current signs of URI, OK for surgery tomorrow

Pre-surgical exam, anesthesia, and surgery performed by ASPCA.

Green linear tattoo placed on ventral abdomen.

Behavior::

KNOWN HISTORY:

Gardenia was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:

Feral behavior. Biting, frantic escape behavior, recoiling from touch

ENRICHMENT NOTES:

06/08/17

Huddled in back of kennel with siblings. Hisses as my hand moves forward and tries to avoid contact, retreating and hissing while raising paw and swatting. Needs more time to adjust.

EVALUATION:

Cage Condition: Cage is re-arranged

Reaction to assessor: Gardenia was tense and pressed up against the back wall of the kennel.

Reaction when softly spoken to: Gardenia’s eyes dart, his ears flatten and her remains completely immobile at the back.

Reaction to cage door opening: Gardenia hisses and looks around the kennel frantically.

Reaction to touch: Gardenia quickly shifts away and continuously tries dodging the assessor’s hand when attempting to make contact. He seems very uncomfortable and tolerates very limited contact if you approach him very slowly.

ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back

VOCAL: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:

Fearful – Gardenia has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.

Kitten socialization – Gardenia is a young cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. He may be apprehensive of people, but the behavior team believes he has potential to warm up to people. Kittens less than 8 weeks of age can be socialized by almost anyone; however, kittens between 2-4 months may require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Please speak to an adoption counselor to learn more about socialization techniques.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

Experienced, adult home only – Gardenia tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult-only home.
