08/25/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Somewhat chatty CHARACTER TYPE: Independent, Sweet MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/22/17- Observed Behavior – a little shy, but easily examined with minimal restraint. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 8/23/17 Seems very conflicted. Initially in litter box, very alert, eyes wide. Whined when spoken to, came out to main compartment for treats. Retreated back into cubby when door opened, rolled around in litter box for a bit, then came back out after some coaxing. Alternated between leaning into pets, and hissing, growling and swatting. Went back into cubby after door closed, rolled around in litter box for a long time. 8/24/17 Asleep in top cubby, woke when spoken to. Came out to main compartment, meowed, eyes dilated. Started stress meowing with increasing duration and volume. Somewhat tolerated pets while eating treats, leaned away when possible, still stress meowing. Put ears sideways and hissed when door closed. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Garbo remains neutral, lying down on her cage bedding during the approach. Reaction to cage door opening: Garbo meows attention, alert with soft eyes, ears erect and forward. Reaction to touch: Garbo stands with tail up and head bunts the assessor’s hand, but elongates her meows during the petting. After a few strokes, she began to randomly hiss while she continues to solicit and roll over in place. BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Initially Garbo solicits petting and attention, but after a few soft passes over the body she begins to hiss at the assessor. This may be a sign of petting-induced aggression, where repeated physical contact results in discomfort for the cat, or it may be a sign of overstimulation. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Garbo becomes reactive. Treats should be used to reward appropriate responses to physical attention.
