01/30/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Fluffy was brought in without information on his behavioral tendencies in a home environment. His finder reported he greeted them when approached and allowed them to pet him on the head, but would attempt to flee when picked up. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Fluffy was resting upon approach, curled up in the middle of the cage. Reaction when softly spoken to: Fluffy ignores the assessor and does not turn to face them, but his ears tilt sideways. Reaction to cage door opening: Fluffy remains motionless. Reaction to touch: Fluffy flinches slightly and looks up at the assessor. He hisses at the assessor’s hand, but allows gentle petting on his head and lip licks. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Displayed distance-increasing behaviors during the exam. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Timid, Calm, Independent RECOMMENDATIONS: _x_ Experienced, adult home only – Fluffy tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent and due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to his/her new home and family at his/her own pace. POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: _x_ Fearful – Fluffy has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
