I came in the shelter as a STRAY on 06/16/2017 from NY 10029, owner surrender reason stated was STRAY. I came in with Group/Litter #K17-101077.

Firefly A1115518 is at risk due to behavior. Firefly was very fearful when initially brought in, displaying distance-increasing behaviors when approached for interaction. She warmed up some to her human caretakers and is a bit more confident during interactions; giving slow blinks and accepting handling. She is still initially fearful when approached and may flinch when touched, but has potential to warm up some more.

06/16/17 11:39 Firefly was very timid during intake. She was laying flat and her pupils were dialated. After going slow, she allowed handling, but then tried to flee when the camera was raised to her. She nipped and strugged to get away. Minimal handling was done after this to reduce stress. Unable to collar.

ACTIVITY LEVEL: Steady VOCAL: Somewhat chatty CHARACTER TYPE: Shy, Curious MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 6/17/17- FRIENDLY ENRICHMENT NOTES: 6/18/17- In den on approach, stuck head out when cage cover lifted, eyes dilated, hissing. Continued hissing and started growling when door opened. Reached out from den, struck assess-a-hand. Initially fled around den to avoid touch, then hunched in place when pet, continued hissing and growling. 6/19/17- In den on approach, quiet today. Held still when den was rotated. Intermittent quiet hissing, but only briefly attempted to flee. Curled up and lay in place, eyes somewhat dilated, tolerated pets. Eventually, after door closed, started eating treats. 6/20/17- Crouched next to den today, tense, eyes dilated. Fled around cage to avoid touché, then crouched in corner and froze. Held immobile when pet, didn’t squirm when picked up, but remained stiff and uncomfortable. Hissed once when returned to cage, fled into den. 6/21/17- Back in den today, started hissing when door opened. Fled into corner to avoid touch. Sat quietly when burrito’d, looked around, no squirming or vocalizing. Tolerated pets with no real response. Fled to back and hissed once when returned to kennel, then sat up and seemed overall less tense. Slow blinking? 6/22/17- Making progress! Resting on top of den today. Became alert on approach, tensed, eyes dilated. Hissed when door opened, started to move away. Sat quietly when burrito’d, eventually fell asleep. Briefly startled awake from room noise, then nuzzled against me and fella sleep again! No real response to pets. Soft posture when held, but became anxious again when returned to kennel. Immediately his in den, hissed and fled from tough. On later visit, laying in litter box on approach. Crouched low and hissed once when door opened, then lay in place and allowed all pets! EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Firefly remains neutral, crouched position by the front during the approach. Reaction to cage door opening: Firefly hisses and stiffens up in place, alert with eyes wide open. Reaction to touch: Firefly allows the touch but seems uncomfortable and cautious with her surroundings. BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Firefly tolerates attention and petting, but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
