SAFE 7/31/18 — 9 year old FIONA was dumped at the shelter due to the old “allergy” excuse even though she was wonderful family pet. Fiona lived with 2 children and was gentle and affectionate with them. She liked playing with balls and laser pointers. This older girl is now feeling very betrayed and is upset. She would love a new home where she can be a cherished part of the family again. A volunteer writes: Snuggly quiet sweet Fiona is a lovely lass who is seeking someone new to love. She purred when I rubbed her head. She seems to love to play with cat toys especially balls. She does take a time out from her head massage, though, to eat her snacks but she’s right back to being your best friend when she’s done eating. She is a lovely lovely girl who will be a serene and kind companion.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:
07/16/18
Standing in front of kennel with a relaxed body, ears forward. Eyes are squinting and tail is raised half way. Tolerates a few pets along the head and body before flattening ears and hissing. Turns head to watch my hand. May be unsure after first day or may be showing signs of petting induced aggression.
07/18/18
Sitting upright in front of kennel, eyes squinting and ears forward. Tail is curled lightly around feet. She makes eye contact when spoken to and head-butts the kennel door. Stands up as cage door opens and allows petting along her head and body while leaning in and raising tail. Her tail begins to wave back and forth with continued interaction and head begins to whip back to watch my hand. I pause and pull my hand away for a few seconds and she turns her head to watch me for a moment before rolling over onto her side and nudging her head towards me. Shows some signs of discomfort with extended interaction. Has potential to warm up!
07/19/18
Sitting up at the front of the kennel, alert, ears forward. Sniffs hand when extended, rubs up for attention. Closes eyes when pet, arches body, tail rises up. She turns her head, and focuses on my hand when pet along her back. Vocalizes and nudges hand, doesn’t seems comfortable with long interactions. Very food motivated- loves tuna.

Reaction to touch:

ACTIVITY LEVEL:
Lively
VOCAL:
Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE:
Bold
Social
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:
Pet-induced aggression
Potential challenges comments:
Initially Fiona solicits petting and attention, but after a few soft passes over the body she begins to flatten her ears and watch the assessor’s hand. This may be a sign of petting-induced aggression, where repeated physical contact results in discomfort for the cat, or it may be a sign of overstimulation. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Fiona becomes reactive. Treats should be used to reward appropriate responses to physical attention. So far Fiona’s signs of petting-induced aggression have been mild.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:
Fiona tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
