03/27/18
Striking, hissing
ENRICHMENT NOTES:
03/27/18
Lying in litterbox, body low and tense. He tolerates petting along his head and body with the bear-claw while turning his head around to watch the scratcher and hissing. Ears flatten as he shifts his weight and pulls his tail right around his body. Uncomfortable, needs more time to adjust.
03/28/18
Low body posture, hunched over his litter box. Pupils dilated, tail pilo-erects and starts to sway. He stress meows and pants when spoken to softly. Very uncomfortable, retreats when the door opens. Tolerates petting with the scratcher. His ears bend flat and he hisses after a few soft passes along his body. Kept interaction short due to stress. Left tuna at the front of the kennel.
03/29/18
Crouched near the front of the kennel, wide eyes, dilated pupils. Yowls and inches away when I pull back the cage cover. Starts breathing rapidly when approached, eyes dart around the cage looking for an exit. Didn’t seem to relax at all when spoken to softly/ playing cat music. Wasn’t interested in tuna or treats, keeps his distance. Kept interaction short due to stress.
03/30/18
Keeps body lowered, pupils dilated. Shifts away and starts to yowl when I pull the cage cover back. Tense and not open to interacting. Left treats at the front and kept interaction short due to stress.
03/31/18
Hiding underneath the kuranda bed. Very stressed. Pupils dilated, yowls when approached. Doesn’t allow any contact. Played Cosmo’s Air Cat music for him and offered treats. Kept interaction short due to stress.
04/01/18
Crouched in back of kennel, pupils dilated and body tense. Stress meows when I lift the cage cover and flinches when I push treats towards him. Sniffs treats curiously, ears shifting forward and pupils remaining very wide. Begins to bat at treats playful, then crouches back down and focuses on me, tail wrapping around body. I lower the cage cover back down and leave him alone. Likes sheba meaty sticks, I hear him batting his treats around as I make my way across the room.

Finn presses his body up against the back of the kennel and starts breathing rapidly as the assessor approaches. His ears bend flat, he displays distance increasing behaviors and currently doesn’t allow any contact.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:
Laid back
VOCAL:
Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE:
Skittish
Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:
Fearful
Potential challenges comments:
Finn has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:
New hope only
Behavior Asilomar
TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:
None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:
Finn is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
