02/22/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Empire Falls was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. He attempted to escape upon intake and was very fearful. He was very tense and nervous during his initial medical exam and would attempt to flee, but he allowed handling and did not show any signs of aggression. The enrichment facilitator has reported he is easily startled. He has a tense body and would shift away from contact and lip lick. His tail remains low and was heavy breathing during the interaction. Reaction to assessor: Empire Falls was lying down with a low body upon approach. Reaction when softly spoken to: Empire Falls lowers his gaze and blinks softly. Reaction to cage door opening: Empire Falls becomes stiff and alert. Reaction to touch: Empire Falls shifts his body and crouches over. He sniffs the assessor’s hand when extended, but hisses and tries to retreat to avoid contact. When briefly petted on his head, he nips the assessor’s hand and lies flat against the ground, trying to hide. Placement Determination: New Hope Only Empire Falls is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to bite, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
