06/22/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Emerald was brought in as a stray, so there is no information on her behavior in her previous home. She appeared nervous during intake, but allowed petting and handling after a couple of minutes. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Tries to flee EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Emerald hisses and retreats. Reaction when softly spoken to: Emerald is hiding in the back. Reaction to cage door opening: Emerald continues to hide. Reaction to touch: Emerald moves away to avoid touch, tense body. Reaction to being picked up: Emerald is tense, and quickly jumps back in. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Timid POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Kitten socialization – Emerald is a young cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. She may be apprehensive of people, but the behavior team believes she has potential to warm up to people. Kittens less than 8 weeks of age can be socialized by almost anyone; however, kittens between 2-4 months may require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Please speak to an adoption counselor to learn more about socialization techniques. BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Please note that this cat is being treated for a medical condition at the time of evaluation. It is difficult to determine at this time how the medical condition may be affecting the behavior. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, adult home only – Emerald tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may need time to warm up to her new home and family. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
