Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: Adults and a new born child Behavior toward strangers: Shy, shows signs of fear and runs away from them Behavior toward children: Fearful Behavior toward cats or dogs: Unknown Bite or Scratch history: None Litter box training: Yes, uses an uncovered litter box with any type of litter Energy level/descriptors: Owner described her as friendly, playful, mellow and shy with a medium activity level. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – hissed in carrier, as per notes from yesterday intake, seems to have improved in terms of being more calm EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Diamond was inside a cat den upon approach. Reaction when softly spoken to: Diamond looks out from a peep hole and blinks. Reaction to cage door opening: Diamond becomes stiff and remains motionless. Reaction to touch: Diamond sniffs the assessor’s hand from the den opening and comes out halfway. She does not feel comfortable enough to come all the way out, but she sniffs the assessor’s hand and places her head under the assessor’s hand to be pet. She accepts gentle petting, but will shrink back inside the den with any sudden noise or movement. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy, Timid, Sweet POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful – Diamond has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may display distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, adult home only – Diamond tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may need more time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
