CLEO aka OCEAN – 9966
Safe - 8-31-2018 Brooklyn
SAFE 8/31/18 – NEW PHOTOS! Adorable little Cleo was adopted back in October 2017 and brought back to us August 2018 after she was rehomed by her adopter in April. Unfortunately her original adopter had to move and rehomed with a neighbor, but the neighbor is elderly and had issues tripping over Cleo. She surrendered because she understandably didn’t want to hurt herself or the cat.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:
10/18/17
Standing in front of kennel, vocalizing softly with ears forward. She begins to stress meow as I speak to her. Allows petting along her head and body while remaining in front of her kennel, body tense as she leans in and raises her tail halfway. Her pupils dilated and she tenses her body when she notices the cat below her. She watches him, growling and stress meowing. No longer focused on interaction, she’s too distracted by the other cat. Needs some time to adjust. Sprayed feliway.
08/19/18
Lying on top of kuranda bed, ears tilted and pupils dilated. Hisses and growls when I lift the cage cover. Tolerates petting along head and shoulders briefly with the scratcher while whipping head back and vocalizing. Unsure. Needs time to adjust.Â
08/20/18
Lying by the front of kennel, chirps and stretches when cage cover is lifted. She gets up and sniffs by the front, but becomes alert when door opens. Sniffs hand and slowly leans in for attention. She may look at hand when pet along body, but she lifts her rear and continues to rub gently for attention. Doing better today.
08/22/18
Crouched over by the front, sniffing around. Leans on cage door and rubs cheeks on it when coaxed. Sniffs hand and allows petting, but tenses up and grumbles when pet on lower body repeatedly. Easily distracted with treats. May prefer brief interactions. Could use some clicker training.
08/27/18
Chirps and rubs on bars. When spoken to chirps and continues to rub ion bars. When kennel opens Cleo rubs on hands full body, continuously. Cleo purrs loudly when given attention. Eats treats when offered.
Cage Condition:
Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:
Cleo was relaxed and vocalizing at the front of the kennel.
Reaction when softly spoken to:
Cleo pauses, then lip licks and becomes very focused on her surroundings.
Reaction to cage door opening:
Cleo remains calm.
Reaction to touch:
Cleo leans forward to sniff the assessor, then nudges his hand and solicits attention. His tail sways occasionally but he remains calm and allows gentle petting on his head and along his body. After a few minutes of contact he turns around, focuses on the assessor’s hand and grumbles.
Reaction to being picked up:
Cleo was tense and started to growl when picked up. She got antsy and quickly leaped back into the kennel.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:
Moderate
VOCAL:
Somewhat chatty
CHARACTER TYPE:
Calm
Easy going
Curious
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:
Uncomfortable with pick up
Potential challenges comments:
Cleo did not appear to like being picked up during their behavior evaluation. Please keep in mind there are many reasons why a cat may be uncomfortable with this type of handling and that this may not necessarily translate into a home environment. We recommend any future home with children be counseled in respecting the cat’s space and for the family to use care when picking her up, especially while she is still adjusting to her new home.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:
Experience
Behavior Asilomar
TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:
None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:
Cleo may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents and any future home with children should conduct a thorough interaction before adopting.
Cleo is showing conflicted behavior in our care center upon her return and will lean in and solicit attention initially but becomes uncomfortable with extended interaction and lets the assessor know by grumbling and growling. An experience behavior rating is still appropriate for Cleo at this time.
Profile:
This behavior note was written by the previous owner of this pet. Animal Care Centers of NYC provides this as a guide for optimal pet placement.
