CHILI PEPPER is active with an excellent appetite but he’s an older guy who needs a vet check…..Give him a home for the holidays!

Hello, my name is Chili Pepper. My animal id is #12456. I am a desexed male brown tabby cat at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 11 years old. – P
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 13-Nov-2017, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving – no pets allowed.
Chili Pepper is at risk due to having non-regenerative anemia. Chili Pepper will need a diagnostic work-up and possibly a blood transfusion. Chili Pepper has been friendly and allowed all handling in the care center.

[DVM Intake] DVM Intake Exam: 1431 Estimated age: 11 years Microchip noted on Intake? no History : surrender Subjective: BAR, hydrated Observed Behavior – friendly, allows exam/treatment with minimal restraint. Evidence of Cruelty seen -no Evidence of Trauma seen -no Objective P =120 R = wnl BCS: 5/9 EENT: Eyes clear, ears clean, no nasal or ocular discharge noted Oral Exam: broken canine, otherwise teeth ok PLN: No enlargements noted H/L: NSR, NMA, CRT < 2, Lungs clear, eupnic ABD: Non painful, no masses palpated U/G: male castrated MSI: Ambulatory x 4, flea dirt noted, no masses noted, scruffy hair coat, appears to be overgrooming hindend/lumbar region CNS: Mentation appropriate – no signs of neurologic abnormalities Assessment: thin haircoat, possible overgrooming; rule out infectious (FAD) vs metabolic/behavior vs other Prognosis: good Plan: monitor appetite/attitude recommend full bloodwork if not gaining wgt or eating well: including cbc/chem with lytes and TT4. New URI noted on rounds Subjective: QAR. No c/v/d but is sneezing. Good appetite but is generally unthrifty. Objective EENT: serous nasal, no ocular d/c H/L: eupneic, sneezing Assessment: URI Geriatric Thin haircoat, possible overgrooming; rule out infectious (FAD) vs metabolic/behavior vs other Plan: Start doxycycline 10mg/kg PO SID x10d until 11/24 CBC/Chem/T4 tomorrow Recheck at day 7, 10 Move to iso Prognosis: Good
CBC shows marked non regenerative anemia (17.2%) and mild neutrophilia and monocytosis Chemistry shows mild increase in globulins A: Marked non-regenerative anemia, mild inflammatory leukogram P: Rec placement ASAP. May require blood transfusion
S/O: BAR. Active, attention seeking, eating with excellent appetite EENT: Nuclear sclerosis, mild serous nasal discharge HL: No sneezing observed A: Marked anemia seen on blood work today P: Rec placement ASAP, may require blood transfusion.

Basic Information:: Chili Pepeer is an 11 year old altered male. He came to his home as a stray when he was a kitten and was surrender due to the owner moving into an apartment that does not allow pets.

How is this cat around strangers?: around strangers d chili Pepper is aloof but does allow to be pet.
How is this cat around children?: Chili Pepper is not friendly around strangers and will hiss or swat if they try to approach him.
How is this cat around other cats?: chili Pepper has never been around other cats.
How is this cat around dogs?: chili Pepper has never been around dogs.
Behavior Notes: Chili Pepper will struglle during a bath and tries to run out. Chili Pepper enjoys being brushed and held. Chili Pepper does struggle to go into the carrier but once food is placed inside he goes in easily.

Chili Pepper islitter box trained and uses a uncovered box with Fresh step non clumping litter. chili Pepper does not have a scratching Post and will scratch on the furniture or drapes.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Friendly, allows exam/treatment with minimal restraint.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/14/17 Lying in back of kennel, body relaxed and ears forward. Allows petting along head and body while remaining relaxed, eyes closed. Seems lethargic. May be showing minimal responses due to medical condition.
Cage Condition:: Cage is recently cleaned
Reaction to assessor:: Chili Pepper was relaxed and grooming himself at the back of the kennel.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Chili Pepper is curious and leans forward to investigate.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Chili Pepper remains calm.
Reaction to touch:: Chili Pepper sniffs the assessor’s hand then gently leans in for attention. He gives head butts, comes forward and perks up when pet along his back.
Reaction to being picked up:: Chili Pepper was a bit tense when picked up, but allowed all handling.

His behavior remains suitable for an adopter with an average amount of experience, provided the adopter is aware of these behaviors and is able to comfortably manage them. Though we believe this cat is displaying behaviors appropriate for new or experienced cat parents, he may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.
