Comes forward when spoken to. Ears are forward, body is soft and eyes are alert. He allows petting along his head and body, leaning in. Purrs softly. He jumps out of the kennel in-between pets – I lift him and carry him back to the kennel with no issue. He does not flee or hiss or scratch, remains calm for duration of session and remains soft when picked up and held. Doing well! Sprayed feliway.
08/13/17
Comes forward when I open the kennel door, tail is raised. Allows petting along head and body, leaning in. Tries to jump out of kennel. Focused on getting out today, not too interested in interacting. Seems comfortable, body is soft and ears are forward. Sprayed feliway.
08/14/17
At front of kennel as I approach, head-butting kennel door. He allows petting along his head and body, raising his tail. Tries to jump out of kennel a couple of times. When focused on interaction he leans in and gives me head-butts. Could benefit from some time in the interaction room. Doing well! Sprayed feliway.
08/15/17
Lying relaxed in center of kennel. He stretches and comes forward as I open the kennel door and allows petting along his head and body, tail raised. He’s not as intent on escaping his kennel today – may be adjusting. He sits down and allows continued petting, leaning in with his head. Head-butting kennel door after interaction has ended. Doing well today! Sprayed feliway.
08/16/17
Comes forward as I open the kennel door. Ears are forward and body is relaxed. He has a very cute and unique face. Allows petting along his head and body while leaning in. Makes eye contact with soft eyes and tail is raised. He’s a bit focused on his environment, will pause to look outside the room or try to jump of the kennel. Ate all treats. Doing well.
08/17/17
At front of kennel as I approach, sitting upright with soft eyes and ears forward. He allows petting along his head and body, leaning in with tial raised. Tries to jump out a few times, so I let him walk onto my lap. He remains relaxed for a few moments before trying to jump out and explore the room. I have no problem placing him back into the kennel, where he allows further petting. Head-butting kennel door after interaction has ended. Doing well! Began to eat dry food after kennel door was closed. May be a social eater. Sprayed feliway.
08/20/17
Lying in front of kennel with a relaxed body, ears forward. I open the kennel door and he comes forward through his portal when called, tail raised. He allows petting along his head and body while leaning in. He jumps out of his kennel as the session progresses and walks towards the banks. I have no problem lifting him and placing him back in the kennel. He remains calm even when he leaves his kennel, he does not run or become agitated. Doing great! Begins eating when placed back in his kennel.

EVALUATION:
Cage Condition: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor: Chester in lying in front of his kennel with a relaxed body as the assessor approaches.
Reaction when softly spoken to: Chester raises his head and makes eye contact when spoken to.
Reaction to cage door opening: Chester comes forward with a raised tail as the cage door opens.
Reaction to touch: Chester allows petting along his head and body while seating himself in front of his kennel and leaning in.
Reaction to being picked up: Chester allows the assessor to pick him up and remains calm and relaxed in the assessor’s arms.
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow
VOCAL: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: Calm, Easy going, Social
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:
– Inappropriate elimination
Chester’s previous owners report that he was eliminating (urinating and/or defecating) outside the litter box for over two months. The previous owners report adding litter boxes, changing litter, new diet, using Feliway, adding cat shelves as other forms of stimulation, etc., but the inappropriate elimination behavior has continued. We advise potential adopters to be aware that this behavior may continue in a home environment, and that they be comfortable with management and modification techniques for this behavioral challenge.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
– Experienced cat parent
Although Chester is showing behaviors in our care center that are appropriate for new pet parents (allows petting, calm demeanor, allows pick-up) he was some surrendered to our care center for having some behavioral issues that will need to be addressed in his new home. He has been reported to have litterbox issues which were not resolved after intervention from his previous owner, and he was reported to have bitten the owner during a previous incident. For these reasons the behavior team must recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
