**SAFE 11/27/17** CHEDDAR is 5 years old, has NEVER been to the vet, and was described by his former owner as being “very sweet.” In fact, Cheddar got along with other cats int he home and slept under the daughter’s bed, but that won’t save his bacon when the ACC euthanasia technician comes for him tomorrow. Hello, my name is Cheddar. My animal id is #12147. I am a male gray tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 1 weeks old. – P
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 09-Nov-2017, with the surrender reason stated as animal behaviour – aggressive towards people.
Cheddar is at risk due to being diagnosed with an Upper Respiratory Infection which is contagious to other cats. Cheddar will likely require in home care with a course of antibiotics. there are no known behavior concerns for Cheddar at this time, average determination.

Recheck for ADR/dehydration reported at intake: S/O: QAR mild dehydration, BCS 4/9 – eating wet food well, u/d ok – OU nuclear sclerosis – h/l mildly tachycardic, excited during exam, nsf – amb x 4, mild atrophy/weakness generalized, snp abd – intact male A: geriatric, intact male cat, mild dehydration P: gave 100 ml LRS SQ – running gen BW/health check – rec’ move out of medical if WNL
CBC/Chem – unremarkable
Bloody stool reported this morning. Hx of dehydration on intake. CBC/chem were unremarkable. Good appetite this morning. Repeat deworming to rule out GI parasites. Recommend SDMA test to investigate CKD despite normal BUN/creat. 1088
Hx: Request to evaluate pt’s age. Pt is BAR in kennel, with good body condition and no sign of muscle wasting or typical age-related body changes. Pt is hissing and staring at me – I did not do a hands-on exam. Pt does not appear to be 16 years old. 1088

Pre-surgical exam + recheck for coughing: S/O: Quiet, mildly dehydrated, BCS 4/9 – behav. becomes mild fractious (growling/hissing) with prolonged handling/PE – intermittent resting cough, also reported when getting excited – no nasal discharge appreciated A: r/o early/mild underlying URI vs other – mildly dehydrated P: postpone neuter surgery due to health + 150 ml LRS SQ + Doxy (50 mg/ml) 0.7 ml PO SID x 10 days

Upon intake, Cheddar walked into the transport carrier on his own. Cheddar had his eyes dilated and was lip licking a bit but he allowed all handling.

Behavior Notes: The owner has never bathed Cheddar, cut his nails, or disturbed him while he is sleeping. Cheddar is not bothered when he is brushed. Cheddar struggles and hisses when he is picked up and held or put into a carrier.

Potential challenges comments:: Cheddar’s previous owners report that he was spraying outside the litter box for an unspecified amount of time. Cheddar has not been seen by a veterinarian for this issue. We are unaware of what, if any, modifications steps were taken to try and address this behavior in the home, so we cannot be sure what the trigger may have been or if this behavior may continue in a future home. However, we recommend that potential adopters be comfortable with management and modification techniques for elimination outside the litter box should this behavior continue in a home environment.

Recommendations comments:: Cheddar interacts with the observer and appreciates attention, but he has a history of being fearful around children. His behavior remains suitable for an adopter with an average amount of experience, provided the adopter is aware of these behaviors and is able to comfortably manage them. Though we believe this cat is displaying behaviors appropriate for new or experienced cat parents, he may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.
