08/25/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY Minimal. Charlie was with the finder for a few days, and scratched her on the right hand when the finder attempted to pet her. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Hissing, swatting, growling during both technician and veterinary examinations. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 8/20/17 Curled up towards back, dozing. Briefly lifted head when spoken to, eyes dilated, then put head back down. Lifted head again when door opened, started growling quietly and lip licking. Slowly sniffed assess-a-hand, allowed all pets, but remained tense. Showed no interest in treats. Sprayed Feliway. 8/21/17 In den, no response to being spoken to. Started growling when door opened. Hissed, growled, and struck assess-a-hand when attempted touch. Sprayed Feliway. 8/22/17 In den, out of sight. Started hissing and deep growling when door opened. Struck assess-a-hand when offered treats. Sprayed Feliway. 8/23/17 In den, peeking through door, low body, eyes dilated. Started hissing and growling when door opened. Sniffed assess-a-hand, then retreated further into den. Ate treats once left alone. Sprayed Feliway. 8/24/17 Briefly crouched on top of den, eyes dilated, tense posture. Hissed on approach, then retreated into den. Hissed, growled, started lip licking when door opened, couldn’t coax back out. After door closed, able to lure to front very slowly with treats. Held body low, very tense, occasional hissing. Sprayed Feliway. POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Charlie has displayed fearful behavior during her stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing and warning behaviors when interacted with. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. PLACEMENT DETERMINATION: NEW HOPE ONLY Due to the scratch history and the behavior seen in the care center, we recommend that Charlie be placed with a New Hope partner.
