Hello, my name is Charlie. My animal id is #12267. I am a desexed male black cat at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years old. – P
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10-Nov-2017, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving – no pets allowed.
Charlie was placed at risk due to behavior concerns, she is not thriving here at the care center and will benefit from placement outside this environment. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.

Nervous, low growled on approach, placed in net for exam, very calm during exam Evidence of Cruelty seen – no Evidence of Trauma seen – no Objective P = WNL R = WNL BCS 5/9 EENT: Corneal scarring at dorsal lateral OS, right eye clear, no nasal discharge noted Oral Exam: Mild dental tartar, pink/pigmented mm (limited exam) H/L: NSR, NMA, CRT < 2, Lungs clear, eupnic ABD: Non painful, no masses palpated U/G: Neutered MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, no masses noted, healthy hair coat CNS: mentation appropriate – no signs of neurologic abnormalities Assessment: Corneal scarring OS Plan: Rec erythromycin q12 x 7 days (if behavior allows). During intake, he allowed to be transferred from the original carrier to a new one. He hissed when approached and did not allow any handling.

How is this cat around strangers?: Charlie is shy around strangers.
How is this cat around children?: Charlie has lived with two children, ages undisclosed, and was reportedly tolerant and relaxed.
How is this cat around other cats?: Charlie lives with another male cat and was reportedly respectful of him.
How is this cat around dogs?: Charlie has not lived with dogs so his behavior is unknown.
Behavior Notes: Owner states no behavioral problems with Charlie.
Bite history:: Charlie has not bitten a person or another animal.

Medical Notes: Charlie has a cataract forming in his left eye.
For a New Family to Know: Charlie likes to sleep around the house and watch people and birds from a window. He will play with catnip toys and stuffed mice. He was kept indoors only.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Nervous, low growled on approach, placed in net for exam, very calm during exam
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/12/17 Lying on top of kuranda bed with a tense body. He tolerates petting along his head and body while turning his head to watch my hand and hissing, ears flat. Needs more time to adjust. 11/13/17 Lying in back of kennel with a low body, pupils dilated. He makes eye contact and tilts hi shears when spoken to. He tolerates petting along his head and body while flattening his ears all the way down and shifting his weight, eyes wide. Not interested in treats at the moment. Needs time to adjust.

Reaction to assessor:: Charlie was tense, wary and pressed up against the back wall of the kennel.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Charlie’s eyes become dilated and he lip licks when spoken to softly.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Charlie is tense and wary.
Reaction to touch:: Charlie’s eyes dart around and he lowers his head when the assessor extends his hand out. He flinches when touched on his head but tolerates gentle petting with a slow approach. His body feels tense and he remains completely immobile throughout the interaction.

Potential challenges comments:: Charlie has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
