MANHATTAN CENTER
Hello, my name is Cathy. My animal id is #10592. I am a female gray cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 weeks old. – P
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 23-Oct-2017, with the surrender reason stated as animal behaviour – aggressive towards people.
Cathy is at risk due to Upper Respiratory infection which is contagious to other cats. She will likely require a course of antibiotics and in home care. We recommend she go to an experienced cat owner with no children.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: 10/23- nervous, hissing, growling, swatting
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/24/17 Lying down by the back, behind soft carrier left in kennel. Ducks her head and focuses on me when spoken to, but inches forward and lip licks. Very slowly sniffs hand when extended, but continues to lip lick and look around with dilated eyes. Hesitant, but allows soft strokes and flinches at times. Seems more focused on surroundings. Sprayed Feliway. 10/25/17 Curled up at back, behind bedding, eyes fully dilated, whiskers straight out. Flattened ears when cage cover lifted, began growling. Ears came up after being sat with quietly for a while. Gaze softened slightly, still occasionally growling, but quieted. Seems to respond well to slow blinking. Left alone for now. Sprayed feliway.

Reaction when softly spoken to:: Cathy becomes alert with eyes wide open.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Cathy remains immobile in place, ears erect and forward.
Reaction to touch:: Cathy began to growl and hiss at the assessor’s hand, but when touched she stiffens and remains cautious with her surroundings.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Inappropriate elimination
Potential challenges comments:: Cathy’s previous owners report that she was eliminating (urinating and defecating) outside the litter box. Please note as well that Cathy’s previous living situation may have contributed to the behavior seen. We cannot be sure whether this behavior will continue in a different home environment, but we recommend that potential adopters be comfortable with management and modification techniques for elimination outside the litter box should this behavior continue in a home environment. She however, uses the litter box during her stay at the care center. We also recommend that Cathy be provided with numerous litter boxes throughout the house as she adjusts to her new living space. The extra boxes can be removed as she learns the space and successfully defecates in her main litter box(es).
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Cathy may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to her new home and family at her own pace.
