Hello, my name is Cassie. My animal id is #17591. I am a desexed female black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 9 years old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 03-Jan-2018, with the surrender reason stated as animal behaviour – aggressive towards people.
Cassie is at risk for behavior reasons. Cassie is very stressed in the shelter, and does not allow petting or handling. Medically, we currently have no concerns for Cassie, who presents as a healthy cat.

upon intake, Cassie started hissing and backing up. Counselor put her soft carrier into a big carrier and backed her into the large carrier. When trying to collar, cassie hissed and backed up again. Counselor did not proceed with collaring. She allowed to be scanned.

How is this cat around strangers?: Cassie is shy and will hide under the bed when strangers come inside the home. she will eventually come out after some time but sit in the middle of the floor. When someone tries to pet her she will give a warning hiss.
How is this cat around children?: Cassie has never been around children so behavior is unknown.
How is this cat around other cats?: Cassie lived with another cat for a couple years but did not play together. They were respectful with each other space.
How is this cat around dogs?: Cassie has lived with two small dogs and was relaxed, respectful, and very tolerant with them. She did not play with them.
Behavior Notes: Owner reported her to give warning hisses and swat but never bitten or charged at a person.
Bite history:: there is no bite history with her.

For a New Family to Know: Cassie is not bothered with bath time but only when the owner is giving it too her. Owner has never tried trimming of nails. Owner stated she will struggle with brushing of coat. Owner stated she will and swat when she is trying to go into carrier. Owner uses a towel to put her in. Owner described as affectionate, playful, confident, and quiet. She likes any type of toys. She eats dry food wellness. She is not a fan of treats. She uses either a hooded or uncovered litterbox. She uses clumping litter. She scratches on leather material.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: 1/4/18 Observed Behavior -netted, swatting, howling
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 1/4/18 Curled up in litter box. Eyes became dilated, started hissing and growling on approach. Flattened ears, hissed, snorted, and lunged forward to strike assess-a-hand when door opened. 1/5/18 On approach Cassie was standing with tail down, stiff body and hissing when seen. Her ears were drawn to the side, slowly increasing distance with eyes dilated while growling to avoid any contact during the attempt to touch. 1/7/18 Curled up in den, face barely visible, eyes fully dilated. Near constant hissing and deep growling, which became louder on approach. Reached out and struck asses-a-hand when offered treats, growled even louder. Still really agitated.
Cage Condition:: No change
Reaction to assessor:: Cassie remains tense, hiding in the cat den during the approach.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Cassie becomes alert with eyes fully dilated.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Cassie began to growl in place with ears turned sideways.
Reaction to touch:: Cassie hisses, spits and growls at the assessor’s hand, avoiding any contact.

Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Cassie is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She is stressed in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
