07/21/17 11:57 Basic: Casper is a 2 year old neutered domestic shorthair that the owner got from a friend who works at another shelter. The owner has to surrender because she has developed severe allergies to Casper and his brother Tiger. The owner has had Casper and his brother since they were kittens and their last vet visit was 2 years ago when she first got them both. Socialization: Around strangers, Casper is very shy but when Tiger plays with strangers he comes around. Casper has never lived with or interacted with children. Around adults, Casper plays very gently. Casper has only lived with his brother Tiger and he is very respectful of him and they play very gently with one another. Casper has never interacted with any other animals. Casper has never bitten or scratched a person or another animal. Behavior: In the car, Casper rides very relaxed and usually falls asleep. The owner has never given Casper a bath. Casper will allow his nails to be trimmed. Casper enjoys being brushed but is independent and prefers to not be picked up. Casper is not bothered when he is put in a carrier or when he is disturbed while he sleeps. For a New Family to Know: Casper is described as very shy. When the owner is at home, Casper stays hidden unless he sees Tiger playing. Casper likes to play with strings and anything that hangs. Casper has been an indoors only cat. Reaction when softly spoken to: Casper focuses on the assessor and starts to breathe rapidly. Reaction to cage door opening: Casper curls his body up. Reaction to touch: Casper accepts gentle petting with a slow approach, but slowly shifts away with continued petting. He begins to grumble softly and looks around, wary of his surroundings, but continues to allow gentle strokes on his head and body. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy, Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful – Casper displayed fearful behavior during his stay in the care center and may be uncomfortable with extended handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, adult home only – Casper tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He will need time to warm up to his new home and family. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
