SAFE 3/22/18 **6-Week Old Adorable Kitten CARLOS NEEDS 6-MONTH DOH QUARANTINE!** Adorable little Carlos has swelling on the left side of his face – the owner reported that she believes the other cat in the home might have bitten him or scratched him. Carlos would require a 45 day isolation and then biweekly – monthly vet visits for 4 months with phone calls at the 5 and 6 months. He would need to be rabies vaccinated as soon as medically and age appropriate. WON’T YOU HELP HIM TODAY?

Basic Information:
Carlos is a 8 week old unaltered male black and white kitten. He came into his home when he was a month old and is being surrendered due to the owner not being able to afford cost of care.
Previously lived with:
2 adults, 3 children, 1 dog , 1 cat
How is this cat around strangers?
Around strangers Carlos is aloof and does not mind being held.
How is this cat around children?
Around children Carlos is calm and friendly and allows them to hold him and pick him up.
MEDICAL:

Vet Notes: 8:55 AM

DVM Intake Exam

Estimated age: 6 weeks
Microchip noted on Intake? negative
History : o/s
Subjective: QARH. Severe swelling on left side of neck. Interested in food but difficulty opening mouth.
Observed Behavior – very sweet but painful in neck region. Easily handleable. Did well for all medical handling and procedures
Evidence of Cruelty seen – no
Evidence of Trauma seen – no

Objective
P = wnl
R = eupneic
BCS 4/9
EENT: Eyes clear with chemosis or left eye from severe swelling on the left side of his neck, ears clean, no nasal discharge noted
Oral Exam: kitten dentition, no oral lesions noted
PLN: No enlargements noted
H/L: NSR, NMA, CRT < 2, Lungs clear, eupneic
ABD: Non painful, no masses palpated
U/G: MI
MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, no masses noted, healthy hair coat, severe swelling on left lateral neck with no obvious puncture wounds
CNS: mentation appropriate – no signs of neurologic abnormalities

Assessment:
Severe swelling on left side of neck
Underage/underweight

Plan: Continue to monitor while at BACC
Start buprenorphine 0.015mg/kg SQ BID x3d until 3/14 (first dose given)
Start clavamox 13.75mg/kg PO BID x7d until 3/19 (first dose given)
Recheck daily
Shave swelling to look for puncture wound-multiple puncture wounds on lateral neck, neck lanced with a #15 blade ventrally and ~30ml purulent d/c drained. The site was then flushed with sterile LRS. The site was left open to drain
DOH-V quarantine-needs hospitalization before hold is up due to illness

Prognosis: Fair

SURGERY: temporary waiver due to underage and wound

**** PLEASE NOTE **** KITTENS under the age of 8 weeks or weighing 2 pounds or less CAN ONLY be PULLED by a RESCUE!!!! IF INTERESTED, PLEASE contact a RESCUE ASAP!!!
