Yet the owner stated she loved to sit on children’s laps to be petted! CALIFORNIA now has the shelter cold and this gorgeous golden -eyed girl will be euthanized if someone doesn’t give her a new home now. CALIFORNIA chirps and loves attention and purrs when you pet her. RESERVE THIS BEAUTIFUL GIRL BY NOON!!

Hello, my name is California. My animal id is #12530. I am a female white cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 weeks old. – P
I came into the shelter as a stray on 13-Nov-2017.
California is at risk for medical reasons. California has contracted Upper Respiratory Infection, which is contagious to other cats. Behaviorally, California has been assessed as being suitable for most homes.

Noted to be sneezing and licking nose several times. very mild nasal d/c moving to iso and starting on doxycycline 40mg po once daily x 7 days.
Due to behavior CT needs to be done at surgery.

Upon intake, California allowed counselor to take her out of the crate and collar her. California begin to hiss and thump her tail on the table and did not allow further handling.

Basic Information:: California is a 2 year old gray and white female domestic short haired cat. California lived with previous owners for about 2 years. California was brought in by the police because the owner’s son was badly scratched and had to be taken to the hospital. California has no injuries or health problems and was taken to the vet about 7 months ago.
Previously lived with:: California previously lived with two adults and two children.
How is this cat around strangers?: California is friendly and outgoing around strangers. California likes to rub her body on strangers legs and will allow to be pet.
How is this cat around children?: California previously lived with a 2 year old boy and 10 year old girl. California liked to sit on their laps and allowed both children to pet him. California did not like to be picked up or engage in rough play.
How is this cat around other cats?: California has not interacted with other cats.
How is this cat around dogs?: California has not interacted with dogs.
Behavior Notes: California has never been given a bath and struggles when getting her nails trimmed. She has never had her coat brushed and struggles and tries to scratch when being picked up and held. California is not bothered when being disturbed as she rests.
Bite history:: California has never bitten but has scratched resulting in bloody punctured wounds.

California likes to play with toy mice and was mostly an indoor cat that would go out onto the fire escape from time to time. California was being fed 9 lives wet food 3 times a day. California is litter box trained and used an uncovered litter box with Tidy Cats litter. California had a scratching post made out of rough rope but would sometimes scratch the sofa.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: very aggressive,tries to bite
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/14/17 Resting next to litter box, eyes dilated. Hissed when cage cover lifted. Hissed, growled, started yowling when door opened. Left alone for now. Sprayed thunderease. 11/15/17 Asleep on bedding next to den, woke when spoken to, lay in place. Eyes became dilated when door opened, started whining quietly. Backed up slightly when offered treats, hissed, swatted without claws. Sprayed thunderease. 11/16/17 Improving! Resting in litter box, tense, eyes dilated. Lay in place when door opened, leaned forward to sniff assess-a-hand. Hissed once, then abruptly started leaning and arching into pets! Ate offered treats, then came slowly forward for more. Played gently when given toy. Sprayed thunderease. 11/19/17 Resting in litter box, wide-eyed, alert. Stood and came to the front on approach, sniffed hand between the bars. Leaned enthusiastically into pets, seemed to become overstimulated. Started hissing, whining, and trying to leave cage while still soliciting attention. Sprayed thunderease. 11/20/17 Curled up in litter box, asleep. Woke when door opened, chirped and came to the front, wide-eyed but soft posture. Leaned and arched enthusiastically into pets, no hissing today!

Reaction to assessor:: California meows and comes to the front of the cage, looks at the assessor with soft eyes and body.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: California begins to rub against the cage front.
Reaction to cage door opening:: California remains calm and relaxed.
Reaction to touch:: California leans and arches into the stroke and begins to purr.
Reaction to being picked up:: California meows and jumps calmly back into the cage.
